Chorągwie smoleńskie (The banners from Smolensk)

The Polish knights taking part in the Tannenberg battle were divided into 51 banners. The Duke of Lithuania , Vytuatas the Great, whose army consisted of 40 banners (Samogitians, Lithuanians, Ruthenians and Tatars), was on the Polish side as well.  It seems difficult to establish the precise number of soldiers involved in the battle. We have estimated  the overall strength of the allied forces at 20,000 Polish cavalry, 10,000 Lithuanian and Ruthenian cavalry, 2,300 – 3,000 Tartar cavalry and about 2,500 infantry.

Presently, having the historical sources dissected,  it is possible to assume how the banners were deployed in particular phases of the battle. It is said, that there were three banners from Smolensk on the left flank of the Lithuanian forces. It seams to us that those three banners were pretty important in the battle.

We would not like to describe the course or phases of the battle at the moment.  However, we find it interesting that after the Vytuatas’ light cavalry had retreated (this escape was planned or not) ,the banners of Smolensk did not panic and remained on the battle-field.  Although they suffered a significant lose (one of the banners was ‘killed to a men’), they fought being completely encircled by the enemy.  It seems possible that  Jogaila might not have noticed that there any Lithuanians still fighting because of clouds of dust. That could be the reason why he did not supported the banners from Smolensk.

Rycerz litewski uzbrojony w lancę, miecz, tarczę trójkątną,
odziany w przeszywanicę, lamelkowy kaftan i kołnierz, nogawice kolcze,
hełm typu bastardziego (typ V według klasyfikacji Kirpicznikowa
z wydłużonym dzwonem zakończonym sterczyną).

Chorągwiami smoleńskimi, walczącymi pod sztandarem obrazującym Archanioła Gabriela, dowodził rodzony brat Jagiełły – kniaź Lingwen Semen Olgeirdowicz z dynastii Giedyminowiczów.

The banners from Smolensk were commanded by Simeon Lingwen from the Gediminis dynasty – Jogaila’s brother.

Herb Giedyminowiczów (Słupy Giedymina).

  2. Hi,
That's not a problem 'cause we speak English quite well :-) That's why we're thinking about translating our blog.
Yes, we're going to make the whole of the Tannenberg battle. This is only about 60k figures. We hope to find some other modelers and invite them to the project. At the moment there are only two of us. If we don't find anybody, we're supposed to finish this project in 100 years ;-)
Recently, except from working on our figures, we've been collecting as many historical sources
as it's possible to make our diorama perfect.
Thank you for your kind comment.
    Greetings,
    Kasia and Paweł

  5. Thanks a lot. The figures are really great and they'd be pretty useful. We especially like Teutonics by Mars. We wonder if it will be possible to buy them in Poland.
